Ben Barthell's Steely Cottage

Ben Barthell built and lives in this great little house on wheels, not only is off the grid, but was also built utilizing a recycled 24′ × 8.5′. He and his friend Bob Davis run Shopdog out of New Mexico.

I’d love to know more about the solar collector on the side wall… it looks to be evacuated tubes with a parabolic reflector behind. Is that their water heater? I’d sure like more details about it.

Yes it is a water heater! It is a self contained closed loop system that has a heat exchanger inside a 30gal pressurized water heater in the house. The system uses a temp set point that controls a pump that circulates the water when the collector water is warmer than the stored water in the tank. Note, I have since replaced the vacuum tube unit with a standard 4’x8′ flat panel collector that is much more efficient. For details on the solar system etc., please take a look at a recent article on my house in Home Power magazine…http://www.homepower.com/articles/solar-electricity/design-installation/taking-tiny-house-grid/page/0/2?v=print
